Single Ply Flat Roofing

Single ply membrane is the modern standard for flat roofing. A single, hot-air welded waterproof sheet means no joints to fail and no torch-on flame on your property. We have installed single ply since 1995 and hold approved-installer training with the leading manufacturers, including as an award-winning Renolit installer, so every roof is fitted to specification and backed by a genuine manufacturer guarantee.

What is single ply membrane roofing?

Single ply is a flexible waterproofing membrane laid in a single layer, rather than the multiple layers of traditional built-up felt. The sheets are rolled out across the roof and the overlaps are hot-air welded together, fusing them into one continuous skin with no glued laps to peel and no naked flame in the process.

The two main types are PVC and TPO. Both are proven, long-life thermoplastics; PVC has a long track record and excellent flexibility and chemical resistance, while TPO is valued for its environmental profile. We specify whichever suits your roof, its detailing and its budget, and explain the choice at the survey.

Why single ply outperforms felt and asphalt

Older felt and asphalt roofs rely on multiple layers and, often, a naked flame to install. They have many more joints, they go brittle and crack in cold weather, and they are heavy. Single ply has far fewer joints, every one of them welded, stays flexible in the cold, and is light enough to suit most existing decks.

The result is a roof with a realistic service life of 25 to 35 years, carrying a manufacturer guarantee of 20 years or more, installed without bringing a flame onto an occupied home, school or commercial building.

Warm roof build-up and detailing

A modern single ply roof is more than just the membrane. We build it up as a warm roof: a vapour control layer, high-performance insulation to meet current Building Regulations, and the membrane on top, with the falls set so water clears to the outlets rather than ponding.

The detailing is where roofs are won or lost. Upstands, kerbs, outlets, rooflights and abutments are all dressed and welded so there is no weak point for water to find. It is slow, careful work, and it is exactly what a specialist installer is for.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a single ply flat roof last?

A correctly installed single ply membrane typically carries a 20 to 25 year manufacturer guarantee and commonly lasts 25 to 35 years with minimal maintenance.

What is the difference between PVC and TPO?

Both are welded thermoplastic membranes. PVC has a long, proven track record and excellent flexibility; TPO is valued for its environmental profile. We specify whichever suits your roof at the survey.

Can you install single ply over my existing roof?

Sometimes, if the deck and insulation are sound and dry. We confirm at the free survey whether an overlay is suitable or a strip-and-refit is the better long-term option.

What colours does the membrane come in?

Most ranges offer grey, anthracite, white, lead and other shades, so the roof can be matched to the building or neighbouring properties.

Is single ply suitable for a green roof or a balcony?

Yes. Several systems are designed to sit beneath green roof build-ups, and we can specify walkway or trafficable finishes for balconies and terraces.

Can you fit single ply in winter?

Yes. Hot-air welding works in cold weather and the membrane does not rely on warm, dry conditions to cure. We avoid laying in heavy rain or snow for quality reasons.
