PVC vs TPO Single Ply Membrane: What's the Difference?
Once you’ve settled on single ply for your flat roof, and if you’ve read our EPDM vs GRP vs single ply guide you’ll know why we’d steer you there, the next question is which membrane: PVC or TPO. Both are a long way ahead of glued EPDM rubber or brittle GRP fibreglass, because both are welded. The choice between them is more about fine-tuning to your roof. Here’s a plain-English guide.
First, why both beat EPDM and GRP
It’s worth being clear about the bigger picture before splitting hairs between PVC and TPO. Both are thermoplastic membranes, which means the seams are joined by hot-air welding into one continuous, homogeneous skin. That’s the single most important property a flat roof can have:
- Unlike EPDM, there are no adhesive laps to perish, peel or fail at the joints.
- Unlike GRP, there’s no rigid shell to craze and crack as the deck expands, contracts and flexes.
So whichever of these two you choose, you’re already getting the welded reliability that the other systems can’t match. Now to the detail.
What is PVC single ply?
PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is the longest-established single ply membrane and the one most specifiers know best. It’s prized for its flexibility, its resistance to chemicals and grease, and a long, proven track record on both commercial and domestic roofs.
Because it stays supple, PVC handles intricate detailing especially well, around outlets, upstands, pipes and rooflights, where a less flexible material would fight you. That makes it a strong all-rounder for the kind of varied domestic work we do across South Yorkshire.
What is TPO single ply?
TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) is a newer membrane, valued mainly for its environmental profile: no plasticisers, no chlorine, and good recyclability. Its lighter, reflective colours bounce heat away, which can help a building stay cooler and trim energy use in summer.
TPO is welded just like PVC, so it shares the same fundamental advantage over EPDM and GRP. It’s an excellent choice where the building’s green credentials or solar reflectance matter.
How they compare
- Track record: PVC has decades of proven performance; TPO is newer but well established.
- Flexibility: PVC tends to stay more flexible over time, which helps with complex detailing.
- Chemical resistance: PVC handles grease and chemicals well, useful near commercial flues and extracts.
- Environmental profile and heat: TPO is plasticiser-free, recyclable and reflective.
- Cost: Broadly comparable; the specification and detailing usually matter more than the membrane.
Single ply membrane in Doncaster and South Yorkshire
We’re approved installers for several manufacturers, so on any given roof in Doncaster, Rotherham or Barnsley we can specify PVC or TPO based on what the roof actually needs, not what we happen to stock. A grease-laden commercial unit and a south-facing domestic extension might call for different membranes, and being multi-system means we can choose properly. See the range on our single ply flat roofing page, and our FAQs for more common questions.

Frequently asked questions
Are PVC and TPO better than EPDM or GRP?
Yes. Both PVC and TPO are hot-air welded into one continuous skin, so they avoid the weak points that let EPDM and GRP down: EPDM relies on adhesive joints that age, and GRP is a rigid surface that can crack as the deck moves. A welded single ply seam has neither problem.
Which lasts longer, PVC or TPO?
Both carry long manufacturer guarantees, typically 20 to 25 years and upwards, when fitted by an approved installer. PVC has the longer proven track record; TPO is newer but well established. In practice the quality of installation and detailing matters more than the choice between them.
Is TPO more environmentally friendly than PVC?
TPO contains no plasticisers or chlorine and is often preferred where recyclability matters, and its lighter colours reflect heat well. PVC, however, stays more flexible over time, which helps with complex detailing. We will recommend whichever suits your roof and priorities.
Do you install both PVC and TPO single ply in Doncaster?
Yes. We are approved installers for several single ply systems and fit both PVC and TPO membranes across Doncaster, Rotherham, Barnsley and the wider South Yorkshire area, choosing the right one for each roof rather than defaulting to a single brand.
