Single Ply Roofing in Doncaster: The Benefits for Local Homes and Businesses
Drive around Doncaster and you’ll see flat roofs everywhere: extensions and dormers on the semis in Bessacarr and Bentley, garage roofs in Armthorpe and Edenthorpe, and acres of warehouse roofing along the M18 corridor. Most of them were covered in felt or rubber when they were built, and most of them will fail the same way, at the joints. Here’s why we fit single ply membrane roofing instead, and why it suits this corner of South Yorkshire so well.
What is single ply?
Single ply is a purpose-made waterproof membrane, usually PVC, fitted in one layer over the roof and joined with hot-air welded seams. There’s no flame, no bitumen and no glued laps. Each sheet is welded to the next so the finished roof behaves like one continuous skin. Our guide to single ply membrane systems covers the different types in detail.
Why it suits Doncaster roofs
South Yorkshire weather is not kind to flat roofs. Wind-driven rain finds every weak lap, standing water sits on shallow falls through wet winters, and freeze-thaw cycles work joints open a little further every year.
That’s exactly where single ply earns its keep. The welded seam is as strong as the membrane itself, so the roof has no weakest point for the weather to attack. Felt depends on torch-on laps and EPDM rubber on glued joints, and age, movement and UV attack those joints first. GRP goes the other way: it’s rigid, so it cracks as the roof structure moves. A welded membrane stays flexible and stays sealed.
The benefits at a glance
- 20–25 year manufacturer guarantees. A correctly installed system from the manufacturers we work with, including Renolit, Fatra, IKO, Sika and Bauder, is guaranteed for decades, not seasons.
- Welded seams, not glued laps. The failure point of felt and rubber roofs simply doesn’t exist.
- Lightweight. Single ply adds very little load, so garages, extensions and older decks rarely need strengthening.
- Warm-roof ready. Re-roofing is the ideal moment to add insulation and meet Building Regulations, making the room below warmer and cheaper to heat.
- Any size of roof. The same technology covers a porch or a factory, which is why it dominates commercial roofing.
- A tidy, modern finish. Clean lines and colour options rather than black bitumen.
Proven on Doncaster’s biggest roofs
The best evidence is local. At Ardagh Glass in Doncaster we installed 18,000 square metres of Renolit Alkorplan membrane over a working glassworks, one of the largest single ply projects in the area, and we’re award-winning Renolit installers. The same welded-seam system, scaled down, is what goes on a kitchen extension in Sprotbrough or a garage in Rossington.

Frequently asked questions
Is single ply roofing suitable for houses in Doncaster?
Yes. Single ply is ideal for the flat roofs you find on Doncaster homes: extensions, dormers, porches and garages. The membrane is lightweight, so it rarely needs any structural strengthening, and it can be fitted as a warm roof that makes the room below noticeably warmer.
How long does a single ply roof last in South Yorkshire’s weather?
A properly installed single ply roof carries a manufacturer-backed guarantee of 20–25 years and will often outlast it. The seams are hot-air welded into one continuous sheet, so there are no glued laps to open up in wind-driven rain or freeze-thaw winters.
Is single ply better than felt or EPDM for local roofs?
We think so, and it’s why we specialise in it. Felt relies on torch-on laps and EPDM on glued joints, and those joints are the first thing to fail as a roof ages. Welded single ply seams are as strong as the membrane itself, which matters on exposed roofs around Doncaster.
